Valar Dohaeris Translates To All Men Must

Reading through David Forbes' FAQ I noticed the entry concerning
'Valar morghulis/dohaeris', resulting in both a query and a possible
alternate translation.
Query first. ASoIaF is the first GRRM series I read so I don't know
much about the man. Is he known as a linguist? Is it likely that he
has worked out some kind of structure and maybe a limited vocabulary
for Valyrian or has he just created those few words we know because
they sound nice?
I'm thinking of course of the master himself, JRRT, who is well known
for creating his languages first and then the stories to explain them.
I don't expect GRRM to be quite so linguistically focused but I am
interested to know what kind of detail we can expect from him in his
languages.
On the alternate translation, the FAQ posits 'First we'll live' as the
translation based on something Ygritte says to Jon. I would modify
that translation to 'All men must live' based on the known meaning of
'Valar Morghulis' as 'All men must die'.
I'm assuming that Morghulis means 'must die' since it sounds
appropriate and is in the right position for those languages I know.
Also, if Valar means 'must die' then the phrase Valar Dohaeris should
also include something about dying.
So, if Morghulis means 'must die' then Valar means 'all men'.
Since Valar is spelled the same and in the same position in a phrase
of the same number of words in Valar Morghulis as in Valar Dohaeris, I
assume that it means the same in both phrases. Thus Valar Dohaeris
translates as 'All men something something.'
In many languages, verb endings are used to determine the tense of the
verb. Since Morghulis and Dohaeris both end in -is, I assume that they
are both in the same tense, i.e. that they both translate as 'must
something'
All the above leads us to modify Ygritte's phrasing somewhat from
'First we'll live' to 'All men must live'. If the Valar
Morghulis/Valar Dohaeris pair of phrases is well known as a
statement/response then Ygritte is merely mutating it to a more
appropriate phraseology in her conversation with Jon.
That's more a phrasing change than an alternate translation so, just
for fun, I'll give an actual alternate translation as well. When I
first read the passage (ASoS - Arya pov p 1041) I guessed that Valar
Dohaeris translated as 'All men must serve'. I have no textual
evidence for 'Dohaer-' as 'serve' but it seemed appropriate at the
time as the response of a captain to a request from a faceless man.
The captain did seem to salute Arya as his superior and become quite
subservient.
It's really just a guess though.
